Easy Fall Candy Corn Puppy Chow Recipe

This easy Candy Corn Puppy Chow is a yummy fall puppy chow recipe. It is perfect to serve at Halloween parties, Thanksgiving, and other fall activities. It’s also a great way to use leftover Halloween candy corn!

This puppy chow recipe is made without peanut butter and uses different colors of candy melts to give the Chex snack mix the look of candy corn plus adds in pieces of candy corn.

Growing up in the Midwest, it is super common to see a bowl of puppy chow at parties and family get togethers, especially during the holiday season.

If you aren’t familiar with it, another name for puppy chow is Muddy Buddies or Muddy Munch. There are a few different names for this homemade treat, but I grew up calling it puppy chow.

Whatever name you prefer to use, it’s a sweet snack that usually uses Chex cereal mixed in and coated with peanut butter, melted chocolate, and powdered sugar.

How Long is Puppy Chow Good For?

Puppy chow mix is a great party snack that you can make ahead of time. You can store homemade puppy chow in an airtight container or zip top bag for up to a week in the refrigerator.

I’ve kept leftover puppy chow in a bag on the counter for a couple of days and it tasted fine. The ingredients are fine at room temperature for a few days, but it will keep better if refrigerated.

Fall Puppy Chow Recipe With Candy Corn

Fall Candy Corn Puppy Chow Ingredients

This puppy chow mix yields about 10 half cup servings. If you want to make more, you can double or triple the recipe. Please note the melting time may vary.

How to Make Candy Corn Puppy Chow Mix Recipe

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

To melt the chocolate candy melts, you can use the microwave or a candy melting pot. I prefer my candy melting pot for more even melting. Follow the directions for the melting pot to completely melt them.

If using the microwave, place the yellow candy melts in a small microwave-safe bowl and heat for 20 seconds at a time, stirring and reheating as needed until completely melted.

If the melted chocolate seems too thick and stiff to pour and coat the cereal you can mix in a little bit of shortening or this Candy Melts EZ Thin Dipping Aid to thin it out to make working with it easier.

Stir in 1 1/2 cups of Chex cereal and coat completely. Then add 1/3 cup of powdered sugar to a large zip top bag and add the yellow candy-coated cereal. Close the bag and shake well to fully coat with sugar, then pour the cereal onto the lined baking sheet.

Repeat these steps with the white candy melts and the orange candy melts.

Let your puppy chow mix dry for an hour before packaging or serving. Then add candy corn and toss to mix. You could also mix in the little candy pumpkins too.

Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups Chex cereal
  • 1/3 cup yellow candy melts
  • 1/3 cup white candy melts
  • 1/3 cup orange candy melts
  • 1 cup powdered confectioner's sugar, divided
  • 1/2 cup candy corn
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons shortening

Instructions
