Christmas Puppy Chow Party Mix

If you aren’t familiar with it, other names for Christmas puppy chow include Reindeer Chow, Muddy Buddies, and Muddy Munch. There are a few different names for this sweet homemade treat, but I grew up calling it puppy chow.

The kids love to help make holiday treats and it’s easy for them to help with this recipe. They’ll have lots of fun shaking up the Chex cereal to coat it with powdered sugar!

Not only is this Christmas Puppy Chow a sweet treat to snack on, but it can be packaged up to give as a party favor or delicious edible Christmas gift.

Christmas Puppy Chow Recipe Ingredients:

This puppy chow mix yields about 10 half cup servings. If you want to make more, you can double or triple the recipe. Please note the melting time may vary.

Helpful Tools:

  • Parchment Paper
  • Cookie Sheet
  • Ziploc Bags

How to Make Christmas Puppy Chow

First, line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Then place the green frosting and 1/4 cup white chocolate chips (or white candy melts) in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat them in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring and reheating as needed.

If the melted chocolate and frosting mixture seems too thick and stiff to pour and coat the cereal, you can mix in a little bit of shortening or this Candy Melts EZ Thin Dipping Aid to thin it out.

Next, stir 2 cups of the Chex cereal into the bowl and coat completely with green.

Add 1/2 cup of the powdered sugar to a large zip top bag and add in the green candy-coated cereal. Close the bag and shake well to fully coat the cereal with sugar, then pour onto the lined baking sheet to dry.

Now repeat the above steps using the white chocolate chips (or white candy melts) and the red frosting.

Let the puppy chow mix dry for an hour before packaging it up or serving in a large bowl.

Red and green coated Chex cereal spread out on baking sheet. Colors are separated, red on left and green on right.

Christmas Puppy Chow Variations:

This basic red and green Christmas puppy chow tastes good as it is, but if you want to change it up, here are a few mix in ideas you can add before serving:

  • Holiday M&Ms
  • Pretzels
  • Peanuts
  • Chocolate chips – regular or mini red and green chips
  • Peanut butter chips
  • Large holiday sprinkles – add some while the chocolate is still wet so they stick to the coated Chex.

HOW LONG IS Christmas PUPPY CHOW GOOD FOR?

Puppy chow mix is a great holiday party snack that you can make ahead of time. You can store homemade puppy chow in an airtight container or zip top bag for up to a week in the refrigerator.

I’ve kept leftover puppy chow in a bag on the counter for a couple of days and it tasted fine. The ingredients are fine at room temperature for a few days, but it will keep better if refrigerated.
