Paper Plate Valentine Craft Supplies

This Paper Plate Valentine Craft makes good use of everyday household materials and craft supplies, making it not only a fun but also an affordable project.

All you would need is a paper plate (any size will do), craft paint, some construction paper (preferably a variety of red, pink, and purple), glue, and safety scissors.

If you don’t want to use paint, you can also use the heart template available at the bottom of this post.

If you have ribbons, glitter glue, or stickers around the house, these could add an extra touch of creativity. The great thing about this project is its flexibility – you can easily substitute materials based on what you have on hand.

For example, if you don’t have construction paper, you could use tissue paper, magazine pages, or even wrapping paper! The key is to encourage creativity and fun without the need for expensive or specialized supplies.

How to Make Paper Plate Valentine Crafts

Create this project effortlessly using either large or small paper plates. Begin by gently folding one plate in half and cutting a heart-shaped hole in it.

If you prefer, you can utilize our heart template as a reference and trace its outline onto the plate.

Paint the plate with the heart-shaped hole, and leave it aside to dry. I used Apple Barrel’s fuschia and flag red paints.

Meanwhile, take another plate of the same size and apply glue to affix strips of construction paper in assorted colors across its center. I found liquid glue adhered better than glue sticks for this particular project.

To maintain a Valentine’s holiday theme, opt for shades of pink, red, and purple. Children can also decorate the plate’s center with torn paper pieces.

Once the painted plate is dry, attach it on top of the other plate. The pattern created by the construction paper strips will be beautifully framed by the heart-shaped hole.

To hang the project, punch a hole at the top of the plates and use a loop of ribbon or twine.

An alternative version of this project eliminates the use of paint by printing the heart template onto colored cardstock paper.

(The template can also be used as a tracing guide or colored in.) Cut out the circle shape, followed by removing the heart-shaped portion from the center.

Next, cover the plate with pieces of construction paper and secure the colored cardstock heart cutout in the center using glue.

Children can embellish the entire plate, or you can trim away everything beyond the colored cardstock circle.

I personally used a small paper plate to create one in this manner, and it turned out to be a perfect size for a charming ornament!

How Often Should Preschoolers Practice Scissor Skills?

Preschoolers should engage in scissor practice regularly, ideally a few times a week. This frequency helps them to develop their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, essential prerequisites for writing.
