Cookies for Dinner ~ Synopsis

Mothers don’t need another “how to” book on parenting. What they need is to know that they’re not the only ones who stand on the supermarket checkout line and share potty training horror stories with total strangers. You can find plenty of books, relatives, and therapists who are happy to tell you how to become the “perfect” mother. Cookies for Dinner is the antidote to all that.

Pam Johnson-Bennett and Kae Allen are two mothers who reveal their imperfections and embarrassments through hilarious true stories. They bravely (or insanely) tell about how one unexpectedly learns the poop capacity of the average car seat, what to wear on Chicken Pox Island and what it feels like to have your toddler lock you out of the house while you’re wearing less-than flattering swimwear. There’s also the fact that no one tells you that your breasts will be treated like a fast food take-out window or that a ravenous infant can create more suction than industrial-grade vacuum cleaners. And, let’s not forget the appropriate technique for removing a crow that is found sitting on the diaper pail while you’re changing your infant’s diapers and how a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit can cause an otherwise rational woman to do strange things.

Being a new mother is hard. I think most of us can agree with that. It’s a time of mixed emotions, learning, and transition. It’s wonderful and scary all at the same time! I’ve read my fair share of parenting books but few did much to comfort me. Actually, a lot of them would scare me more! But! The good news is, there are some fantastic books out there as well. Some I wish I’d known about while I was pregnant.

Some days I think I’m an awesome mom.  I take care of my little girl – she’s clothed, fed, clean (usually), and has frequent diaper changes.  I breastfeed.  I cloth diaper.

While I may do those things, it doesn’t mean I’m perfect.  I’m not even close to perfect.

My house.. is a mess.  My husband still makes a lot of our dinners and still does extra chores that he picked up shortly before I gave birth.  I love him for it, but y’know, it makes me question myself.

{Please welcome Jen for today’s guest post!}

Jen is a boring business analyst by day, college student by night, and rockstar mommy ’round the clock. She is excited to celebrate her first Mother’s Day with her adorable 8 month old son Levi.

You can read more from Jen on her blog Life With Levi or connect with her on Twitter and Facebook.

Being a new mom is tough. You’re figuring out this whole child-rearing thing for the first time. There are lots of people giving you all sorts of advice. The research studies seems to contradict each other. There’s a person that you created that is totally and completely dependent on you.
Wow. Take that in for a moment. You created someone. You made a person. A real living and breathing human being. Ok, maybe you had a little bit of help. Partner, husband, sperm donor, God…there’s someone that helped get us here, but we’re here, and I think we should start by celebrating that. This Mother’s Day, I’d love for all moms to focus on themselves.

While celebrating, I’d like you to remember 3 things:

You Created A Person

In and of itself, that’s something to celebrate. For 9 months, give or take, you made the little person staring back at you. How cool is that?

I’ve learned quickly that motherhood isn’t easy.  I don’t care how many times some one told me that before having my daughter or who told me.  It’s one of those ya gotta be there and go through it yourself kind of things.  While I was pregnant, I did a lot of reading.  Now, I don’t have as much time to read as I’d like.

And no matter how much support I have around me, it’s still nice to find stories to relate to…part of my draw to blogging and bloggers, right?

When I was asked if I was interested in including Daily Guideposts: The First Year of Motherhood, my first thought was “Do I have time to read another book right now?”

But that’s the beauty of this book.  You don’t have to sit and read for a long time to get something out of it.

It’s time to unveil our first themed event.  I’m pretty excited about putting this together!

New Mama's Day

This year will be my first official Mother’s Day.

(A big THANK YOU to Hello Mommy! for making the button for me! <3)

Last year I was about 12 weeks pregnant, but despite the sweet Mother’s Day card I got from Brian (which promptly made me cry!), it didn’t really feel like it.  I wasn’t fully inducted into motherhood yet.  I was merely a honored nominee.

But this year…

Whoa, boy, I tell ya, I am starting to feel like a mother and I’m only about 5 months in!

To celebrate, I am hosting New Mama’s Day from May 1st through May 8th.  It will be chock full of reviews, giveaways, and other fun stuff!  There’ll be 1-2 giveaways starting each day of the event and they’ll be open for 7 days each.

That’s over $400 in prizes! I decided not to do a large prize pack in order to offer prizes to multiple winners.  Also, you will be eligible to win more than one giveaway during the event.
