Tales From the Nursery: The Toddler Years

Watching Baby Play

The other day I was stressed out and feeling a little low so I did what needed to be done…. I stepped back and enjoyed my daughter. I play with her everyday but let’s be honest, my head isn’t always 100% in it. Heck, sometimes I am multitasking with my phone.

But, we need quality, uninterrupted time together too… Like we had as we got to know each other.

Again, my daughter proceeded to amaze me. Not because she herself is amazing or extraordinary. I’m not going to gush about her uniqueness. But just the amazement of BABIES. Watching them learn and imitate. It’s rather fascinating, don’t you think?

Rissa had already slid off my lap after a nursing session and was playing with her toys in the middle of the living room. I closed my laptop, set down my phone, and slid out of my chair and onto the floor. Quietly I observed.

She was repeatedly taking one cup out of the other and clinking them against each other. She moved a water bottle over each cup, tapping it against them. She babbled as she waved her arms in the air, her little body bopping up and down as though jumping while sitting.

She picked up her little dolly and babbled, tilting her side to side and shaking her around. They appeared to be dancing!

I watched as she repeatedly put things inside others, bang them against other toys, scratch them, shake them, and even tried to pull and rip them apart.

While I think she’s still too young for “pretend play” (I don’t really know) I could tell she was examining how things worked, how they fit together, and was imitating things she saw ME do with her toys.

It was adorable and I knew where I belonged.

Though, it didn’t take long before she came over to climb on me. After all, I’m the coolest toy she plays with!

I agree sometimes we forget to concentrate on what they are really doing, playing. We see them, but we don’t “see them”. I am glad you got a chance to just see her…and I agree you must be the coolest toy of the bunch!BeckyWillis

So true Darcy. I’ve been going through the same with my 14 month old and it amazes me how he has grown so much from being that tiny independent baby to the inquisitive toddling adventurer he is now. Our babies grow way too fast!

PS I love being his coolest toy too :)ebmommy

Baby Girls are so precious and yes, just watching their little brains figure things out can be so rewarding and get us back on track at what are the most important things in life. Sitting back and drinking in our children.

  6. I love that age! So sweet… My daughter is five now and I miss when she would play like that, just moving from toy to toy but coming back to me. Aw! Thanks for bringing back those memories.

Aww, I know what you mean. I love watching babies play and discover new things. Maybe it’s because everything IS new to them… but babies have a way of making ordinary things seem fascinating, lol.Becky

Awwww what a precious “mommy” moment! Makes me miss having a baby around! My “baby boys” are grown. They are 22 and 13. So I guess the next baby in my life will be a grandbaby! While at 42 I don’t feel old enough to be a grandmother and Im sure the first time I’m called “Granny” or “Nana” will be a shock to my system,I’m thrilled to know I have it all to look forward to! Spend every minute you can with your precious baby because she will be grown before you know it.

I love to watch my kids play. I loved to observe them in all their different stages. My kids were the opposite especially my daughter they could play for a long time by themselves it was amazing to just stand back and watch them. Even now I sneak and peek through my daughters door just to watch her..it’s just too darn cutecrystalnjoe1105
