Breastfeeding Blog Hop: When to Wean?
Welcome to week 12 of the Breastfeeding Blog Hop! I’m honored to be this week’s guest host! So, after you are done reading my ramblings, please visit the other lovelies on the linky below – and link up if you have a post related to weaning!
A quick glimpse at who I am, in case this is your first visit:
About me: I’m Darcy, a part-time WAHM of a 4 month old girl. We’ve mostly been exclusively breastfeeding. Unfortunately my daughter had to have a few bottles of formula when we had a couple days of latch problems and I didn’t have a pump yet. Overall I’m loving the opportunity to be home and nursing her!
When to Wean My Nursing Baby?
Truth be told, I don’t want to think about weaning. I mean, sure, I don’t want a teenager hangin’ off my boob, but… it will be the end of our special time.
It’ll be just another sign that my baby is growing up so fast.
Before I got pregnant, I always figured I’d nurse for the first six months. During my pregnancy I thought we’d go nine months to a year. After she arrived, I decided a year would be the best as long as she didn’t strike or wean herself.
Now, after more reading and research, I’m comfortable with up to two years. Honestly, I used to think that was strange. (No, I was never rude to anyone about it!) But now, I’m a bit wiser about the miracle of mama milk.
After last week’s discussion on starting solids, I’ve decided to give Rissa the reins… so it will be up to her.
Oddly enough, there are moments I do wish I was “free” from nursing. But those thoughts are fleeting and like to sneak in when stress gives me a moment of weakness. The rest of the time I love it.
I’m in no hurry.

I hope you can reach your goals! I’m kind of struggling right now. We’re still nursing around the clock but my supply took a big hit and I’m panicking that it’s not going to come back. I really really want to get to a year. anything after that is icing on the cake.

With my little man’s first birthday looming, I’ve been thinking about weaning a LOT! I know for sure I need to night wean him: Mama needs a full night’s sleep one of these days, and he doesn’t really *need* to be eating at night anyway.
But as for total weaning…it’s such a hard choice!
I’ve been meaning to start blogging about breastfeeding. Maybe one of these days…
Totally with you on wanting to stop sometimes. Usually, I LOVE it. But there are days when I think it would just be easier and more convenient FOR ME to wean her. And then I remember how hard bottles are…as I’ve done both, and we keep going.
Gotta love it.
I’ve nursed a 3 year old. NEVER thought I would go much beyond 1…but 1 crept up on us and I thought NO WAY. LOL
Joining in the breastfeeding blog hop. I didnt have a recent post so linked up an old one.blessedquiver
I have to say… not wearing the nursing pads is a big bonus lol. Good for you for not feeling the dreaded pressure and giving yourself permission to allow it all to just happen :) & congrats on guest hosting!mryjhnsn
Thanks so much for guest hosting this week’s Breastfeeding Blog Hop! Isn’t it funny how you start out with a bfing goal, then extend it longer once you get the hang of it? :)LifeWithLevi
Hi there – found you thru the hop!
I too have fleeting feelings of wishing to be “free” from nursing… mostly when I want to leave the baby with my mom or hubby for the day (I hate to pump). But… he’s a year and he’ll wean soon enough I suppose so I am just going to enjoy the ride! :)
I’m glad I’m not the only one that gets those moments. I hope we can reach a year, I really do. And I hope all of you reach your goals too!Syrana
