As I mentioned previously, the main downtown area in the city I live in (hello suburbia!) is full of small local shops. This is where we hold a variety of festivals throughout the year, such as Strawberry Fest. I can't imagine what it'd be like around here if these shops didn't exist. It would definitely hurt the economy in our area, I think, because downtown has become sort of a tourist attraction especially in the summer.
Would there be more “big box” stores if the local ones didn't exist? I don't know. I don't think so because the space just isn't there the way it is designed right now. It certainly would not be as fun to just walk around if it was any other way. And no way would “big box” stores be okay with closing off the street and moving business outside for the festivals the way we experience them now!
There is a nice variety of local businesses here: confectioners, restaurants, garden, home decor, crafting, butcher, consignment and even a theater!
I love being able to shop in a specialized boutique because I feel like there are more options available. Plus, they tend to have more unique and handcrafted items. Some of them take in items from local artisans to sell which supports our community even more. Another thing I like is how small businesses are often more involved with the community directly whether it's to rally behind a family in need or to support local recreational sports leagues.
And let's not forget the service. Even though people from my community also work in chain stores, word of mouth is super important for the survival of smaller shops. So, it feels like they take more time, attention, and care when interacting with their customers. Have you noticed this too or is it just me?
Next week I'll share with you some of my favorite local small businesses. Here's a hint – most of them are food related!
