Rissa is getting more and more interested in books – which I love! She wants to be read to and likes to look through her books on her own. She even reads them to me! Although she has decided on a favorite book, she definitely enjoys when mama pulls out a new one she’s never seen before. With her turning one, I definitely feel like I need to feed her mind with books! Lots and lots of books!
We received an advanced reader copy a couple months ago (It released on October 1, 2011) of The Journey of the Noble Gnarble by Daniel Errico and illustrated by Tiffant Turrill. This book is geared towards preschool children (3-6 years) and is about a gnarble who decides he wants to see the sky, though he lives on the bottom of the sea. He was bound and determined despite the doubts of those around him. It sends a ositive message about not giving up just because someone else doesn’t think you can (or should) do what you aspire to do.
The drawings are interesting as everything in the sea is unlike anything I’ve seen before. The world is transformed to be the world of this little gnarble. While most of the pages seem dark (bottom of the sea!) the colors are actually quite vibrant. There aren’t a lot used on each page which makes the brighter colors really pop.
We enjoyed reading this book together. It’s like Nemo met Dr. Seuss! The rhymes are fun and get big smiles from my daughter. I also liked learning about the author, Daniel. He’s passionate about providing stories to all children regardless of economic status and creates stories on various media: print, apps, web, etc.

Darcy Zalewski is a work at home mom with a daughter born in 2010 and a son born in December of 2012. Thankfully she never fully grew up and still loves to play with toys. She shares her experiences and passions about birth and parenting on her blog, Life With Darcy and Brian. Never try to stand between her and a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup though...
