Growing up I associated Disney with family movies, classic animated tales, and amusement parks. Somewhere along the way it became more about the princesses but the mouse was still prominent. Last year the unleashed superheroes to record breaking heights.
Then something truly epic happened.
Walt Disney Studios bought LucasFilms.
I was shocked…but then my geek nerves started tingling. Would there really be another Star Wars movie in my lifetime? Some people question whether or not Disney can pull it off. I have faith that they will – I mean, they did a great job with acquiring Marvel. They raised the bar for comic book superhero movies with The Avengers.
They’ll do it and do it well.
And I’m thrilled to get updates information from Disney about progress on films and releases. Since I’m pretty excited about this one I wanted to share this update I received!
J.J. Abrams to Direct Star Wars: Episode VII
“J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.
“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”
George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.””
Besides Lucas there are a couple other consultants that have a history with the previous episodes. It’ll be exciting to see what they come up with!
