Halloween Spaghetti for Sensory Play

Looking for fun Halloween activities for kids? This Halloween Spaghetti recipe is perfect whether you want to use it for sensory play or serve as a meal.

This colorful Halloween pasta is fun and easier to make than I thought.

When I was younger, I played a game at Halloween parties where you touched things while blindfolded, such as spaghetti brains and peeled grape eyeballs.

I also remember eating green noodles for dinner at a friend’s house once (but I can’t quite remember why). Both of these things sparked the idea for me to try dyeing spaghetti noodles.

How to Make Halloween Spaghetti

You don’t have to play with your food, you can serve this Halloween pasta recipe for dinner too!

Babies and toddlers learn by experiencing things through their senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing.

Overall, I consider this a taste-safe activity for toddlers.

This does require the use of food coloring to make Halloween colored spaghetti so it’s up to you if its just to play with or eat.

This activity isn’t just for the little ones. Preschoolers and older kids can dig in with their hands to explore the dyed paste too and discuss how it feels.

You can also add other Halloween themed items like toy spiders, bugs, and eyeballs to create a complete themed sensory bin. Or provide a pair of scissors for them to practice cutting skills on the noodles.

You can choose whatever color combination you’d like, but I love this green, orange and purple (which almost looks black, doesn’t it?).

Halloween Spaghetti Instructions

I suggest cooking a box of spaghetti noodles, but you can make as much as you want.

Cook the spaghetti according to the directions on the box. I boiled my spaghetti for about 10 minutes, drained it and rinsed with cold water.

I divided the spaghetti into three separate Ziploc bags. Then added a couple tablespoons of water and food coloring to each one.

20 drops seemed to be the optimal number for the shades of color I created.

  • Green: 20 drops of green
  • Purple: 15 drops of blue and 5 drops of red
  • Orange: 17 drops of yellow and 3 drops of red

I sealed the bags, mixed (ahem, shook & squished) the noodles into the colored water and let them sit for a minute or two.

I dumped the noodles back into the colander and rinsed the excess dye off with cold water.

Now the Halloween noodles are ready for play time or just heat them back up to serve for dinner!
