The use of edible ink to draw the bear’s features helps develop hand-eye coordination. This activity also fosters an understanding of basic scientific concepts, as children observe how water acts as an adhesive to bind the marshmallows together.

Materials for Marshmallow Polar Bears

If you have marshmallows in your kitchen, you’re all set for this project. We used super jumbo marshmallows and mini marshmallows to make our bears, but you can also use mini marshmallows and regular sized marshmallows.

How to Make Marshmallow Polar Bears

Choose a jumbo marshmallow for the body of your polar bear. Look for one with a flatter side (or squeeze it a little to create a flatter side). This will serve as the base where the feet will attach.

Instruct your kids to dip a paintbrush into water and use it to coat one side of a mini marshmallow. This will make it sticky and allow it to adhere to the bottom of the jumbo marshmallow. Repeat this process three more times to complete the legs.

Use two different sized marshmallows for this polar bear food craft.

Flip the bear onto its feet and “glue” one marshmallow to the back as a tail and another to the front as a nose. Attach two mini marshmallows near one end of the jumbo marshmallow to create ears.

Using the end of a toothpick dipped in food coloring, carefully add two dots above the snout to form the eyes.

Cover the front part of the bear’s snout or create a dot in the center of the mini marshmallow to make its nose. Allow the marshmallow to dry.

Once the polar bears are dry, your kids can either enjoy them right away or use them as decorative accents for a gingerbread house or other winter scene in your home.

Marshmallow Polar Bear Craft

Yield: 2
Active Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Estimated Cost: $10 or less

Kids will love making this fun, edible polar bear craft using marshmallows.

Materials

  • Jumbo marshmallows
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Toothpick
  • Paintbrush
  • Small cup of water
  • Food coloring (we used blue gel coloring)

Instructions

    1. Select a jumbo marshmallow for the body of your polar bear. Our jumbo marshmallows had one side that was flatter, which we used as the bottom of the bear where the feet attached.
    2. Dip a paintbrush in the water and paint one side of a mini marshmallow with the water. This will make it sticky and it will stick to the bottom of the jumbo marshmallow.
    3. Repeat three more times to complete the legs.
    4. Flip your bear onto its feet. “glue” one marshmallow to the back as a tail and one to the front as a nose.
    5. Glue two mini marshmallows to the top of the jumbo marshmallow near one end to make ears.
    6. Dip the end of a toothpick into your food coloring. Carefully add two dots of color above the snout to make eyes.
    7. Using the food coloring, cover the entire front part of the bear's snout to make its nose or make a dot in the center of the mini marshmallow.
    8. Let the marshmallow dry.
