A Toddler Friendly Christmas Tree

When I was little, I loved helping to decorate the Christmas tree.  We’d put it up anytime after Thanksgiving and before Christmas Eve, making a night of it.  We typically put up an artificial tree (that my dad marked in some sort of code so we’d know what branches went where).  I only remember having a real tree once or twice in my life.

Back then, we had to test the each bulb on the light strands before wrapping them around the tree.  Next we’d add garland, then ornaments.  We had a lot of homemade ornaments that my mom made (then later ones I made at school or with my mom).  It was never the prettiest tree, but it was OURS.  I mean, it was pretty in its own way – it just wasn’t one of those perfectly done trees with a color scheme or anything.  You know, those catalog trees?

Being little and short, I hung everything along the bottom in the front.  After I’d go to bed my parents would re-distribute the ornaments more evenly around the tree.  Soon I can start a similar tradition with my own daughter.  But first, we have to get a bigger tree (we currently only have a 3 foot tall tree) and find a place to put it up.  Admittedly, we rarely put up our tree since I have a lot of mixed emotions surrounding the holidays.  If we do put it up, it’s usually closer to Christmas so it’s not up for very long.

I know Rissa will have a hard time keeping her hands off of the tree (much like the cats) so when we received My First Christmas Tree from One Step Ahead, I thought it was the perfect way to introduce Rissa to tree decorating!

It comes with several ornaments, two different tree toppers, and even a tree skirt.  Everything fits into a cute little present shaped plush box.  Rissa has fun setting her tree up, decorating it, and changing the toppers.  She’s learned a little bit about Christmas trees from some of her favorite shows and books (plus she did see a few last year at other people’s houses).  I think it’s a great way for her to play and have a tree that is entirely her own.  Plus, it’s machine washable so I don’t have to worry too much about her getting it dirty!

Do you prefer big Christmas trees or smaller personalized trees?

Last year the bottom half of our tree was completely bare (no lights, garlands, or ornaments) because our toddler could not stop grabbing everything. I hope we can decorate the tree this year!

We have an artificial tree and this year my daughter is mobile so I don’t think we will put many ornaments on it! I think I will put a few un-breakable ones lower so she can play with those. I love the My First Christmas Tree toy, looks like fun!

I am so excited this Christmas as I have a 19 month old and I think she will enjoy Christmas so much. I plan to get a bunch of plastic ornaments for the tree, and put them anywhere that she can reach… :)MrsKucz

How wonderful to have their own tree that you don’t have to keep telling them not to touch! I also love the fact that it’s washable.

We prefer a medium tree (can’t have too big of one with 8 ft ceilings! LOL) and it is decorated much like yours was. Mainly ornaments that have been made and others were passed down from my grandparents so it’s very personalized! I think dd would love this since she has actually been asking for a tree in her room! She can use this there and I don’t have to worry about water spilling or pine needles all over the floor!

I personally like both kinds of trees. I love the big ones when we have a place to put it and I love using smaller trees when we don’t need a big tree. :)

Love the Toddler Tree :) I have a very small tree, more personal. When I was growing up, we put the artificial tree up every year the weekend before Christmas, then kept it up til after New Year’s. I also had a little manger that my parents had bought for me as I was the oldest and had no siblings for a while. I had it for years, but I don’t know where it is now :( This todder tree can be hers for many years and glad it’s machine washable! ;)

I love a big tree but filled with personal ornaments from our lives. I am afraid of putting up our tree because my son is such a busy toddler, I love the child friendly tree idea

I love a big tree because we have so many ornaments it is necessary at this point. This tree is really cute since my daughter was just slightly too young to decorate the big tree this year.

What a wonderful way to get little ones involved in celebrating the christmas season safely. You can truly make them feel special by allowing them their very own tree to decorate.

This is the 1st year my littlest one will be around a tree (while being mobile). Maybe this could help teach him how to treat the xmas tree!

I like that this is a good way to get a young one involved. plus they will feel special having their own tree.

My daughter has been messing with the tree since we put it up. My girlfriend doesn’t want her touching it though because she tends to break alot of things and some of the ornaments on the tree are really importnat to her. This would solve that problem. She could play with the tree without giving mommy a mini heart attack :P Thanks for the post.

The bottom 2′ of our tree is crazy looking! I have a 15 month old daughter that has completely decorated the tree how she feels it should be decorated! There is one limb FULL of ornaments and the rest is bare! I guess that is her favorite limb! lol and I have found ornaments all over the house!

I have a 1 yr old grandson who is learning about the Christmas tree @ my daughters house and he is learning to leave it alone when she is home, but as soon as she walks out the door and leaves me there he goes straight for it. I don’t have mine up yet but do plan on putting one up, hopefully soon so I don’t wait until the last minute like I have in the past. I am trying to think of the easiest place to put on so that we don’t spend time messing with it when the Grandsons are here to visit.

the grandkid is out of state, but with 10 (yes, i said 10) pomeranians, we have a small pink (yes, i said pink) tabletop tree

This is the first year I’ve actually put up a full size Christmas tree. My boys (3 and 14-months), like most toddlers, love to get their hands on anything and everything…including Christmas trees and decorations. So, to make things safer…my husband has bolted our 6 foot Christmas tree to a 3 foot tall wooden filing cabinet! Now our little guys can enjoy the Christmas tree without having their hands on it!

I grew up with a silver tree and a colored light that went around and made colors shine on the tree. After getting married we would get a real tree every year, about a year ago we broke down and purchased one from Costco, it is soo bigg!
I love this tree, our Granddaughter will love it. At her house and other’s homes she is not allowed to touch other’s trees. I let her pick an ornament off of our tree every year, but this is so adorable, she would love this in her room.ncjeepster

My girls would love this! Especially my 3 year old. :) We only have a tiny, 24 inch fiber optic tree, though Daddy wants to get a real one this year, if we can afford it, but this could be her own, personal tree. :)
