Tales From the Nursery: The Toddler Years

Lady and the Tramp Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Review

LADY AND THE TRAMP: DIAMOND EDITION

Synopsis:

A classic love story unfolds in the best Disney tradition as a lovely young pedigreed cocker spaniel named Lady, who lives a pampered life, finds herself falling romantically for Tramp, an amorous street-smart pooch without prospects. Although they have fun together on several dates, including a sentimental spaghetti dinner by moonlight at Tony’s restaurant, their relationship is strained not only by Lady’s loyalty to her human family and their newborn baby, but by Tramp’s devil-may-care attitude that eventually gets Lady in trouble and tossed into the dog pound. However, good-hearted Tramp redeems himself by saving the baby from potential harm and thus wins Lady’s love and the affection of her human family.

My Review:

For the first time on Blu-ray, Lady and the Tramp was released from the vault on February 7th, 2012.  I was so excited to add this to our collection.  Besides my own love for Disney movies, I want to collect the classics for Rissa.  It had been many years since either my husband or I had watched Lady and the Tramp.  It’s a classic you never really forget though.  It was enjoyable to watch and it looked good on Blu-ray.  It definitely does not have the same look as today’s animation nor does it have the fast paced action and other “excitement” of today’s movies.

Here is a clip of one of the most iconic scenes, which is also my favorite:

One thing I love about these re-releases is gaining access to extras.  It’s normal now to have bonuses on every new movie, but it’s interesting to find out what is available for classic movies since they never really thought about releasing behind the scenes footage or interviews while filming.  Here are a list of the bonus features that come with the Diamond Edition:

Blu-ray Bonus:

  • Disney Second Screen: Inside Walt’s Story Meetings*
  • Audio Commentary: Inside Walt’s Story Meetings
  • Diane Disney Miller: Remembering Dad
  • Three Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes
  • Never Recorded Song: “I’m Free as the Breeze”

Classic DVD Bonus:

  •  Lady’s Pedigree: The Making of Lady and the Tramp
  •  Finding Lady: The Art of the Storyboard
  • Original 1943 Storyboard Version of the Film
  • PuppyPedia: Going to the Dogs
  • “The Siamese Cat Song,” Finding a Voice for the Cats
  • “Bella Notte” Music Video
  • Trailers
  • Excerpts from “Disneyland” TV Shows

DVD Bonus:

  • Diane Disney Miller: Remembering Dad
  • PuppyPedia: Going to the Dogs

Digital Bonus:

  • Diane Disney Miller: Remembering Dad
  • Three Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes
  • PuppyPedia: Going to the Dogs

I watched pretty much all of the bonus features so far except the Disney’s Second Screen.  I do want to do that, but it’s going to be a pain to use my iPhone to do it.  I might have to borrow someone’s iPad.  What you do is have the Disney’s Second Screen app on either device and set it up next to the television.  You sync them up and are able to watch fun extras like sketches as the movie plays.  It looks really neat and has a lot of interesting pictures and even some games to play along the way.

The Puppypedia feature is partially narrated and partially hosted by Fred Willard, lending humor to interviews with dogs and their owners. It’s mainly an educational feature with a brief history about dogs and the seven types of breeds. Plenty of examples are shared through real life dog footage as well as dog characters from various animated Disney movies.

Finding the voice of the Siamese cats was odd because I know what they sound like in the movie.  It’s their voice, it’s hard to imagine a different one being used.  The Siamese if You Please song plays while various sketches of the cats are shown.  Several different spins on the voice are heard singing stanzas.

The Remembering Dad extra was probably one of the most touching.  Diane Disney Miller, Walt Disney’s daughter, shared that many people did not know that her parents had a small apartment at Disneyland above the firehouse because he felt he should be there. Her parents spent many weekends there. Sometimes the grandkids would stay there too, and a few times the whole family did.  Her parents loved the Victorian period, which is how the apartment was decorated since their home was not done in this way. It was designed by Emile Kuri, a Disney set decorator.  It was interesting listening to her reminisce.
