Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson portray three men from very different walks of life, facing a mid-life crisis, a work-life crisis and a no-life crisis. My review:
When I first heard about this movie coming out, I admit it, I skipped the synopsis and focused on the all-star comedy cast. With three of my favorite funny men, it was bound to be HILARious, right? Well, not so much. Don’t get me wrong, it was an enjoyable watch! It just wasn’t the level of comedy I was hoping for, but that was my fault for not reading. I think I learned a thing or two about birds in the process, which is kind of neat. I seriously never thought birding could get so serious and competitive!
This was a comedy, but it’s not your run-of-the-mill comedy. Most of the humor stemmed from the (to me) ridiculousness of competitive birding… satirical in nature. I remember apologizing to my husband shortly after it started, but it got much better after that. He commented on how he’d never heard of it before and we talked about how it doesn’t present itself as appealing to a massively large audience.
For a taste of the humor used, check out this bird coaching video!
If you absolutely hate birds, you probably should skip this movie. However, if you enjoy this cast and having some laughs as you watch the characters develop before you, then enjoy it! I thought it had some good life lessons in there, too, about valuing family, determination, and hard work. These values don’t always go hand-in-hand very well, but with some juggling and priority setting they can be balanced. It is rated PG and is family friendly, so maybe rent it for a family movie night?
I received a promotional-only DVD version, so I can’t evaluate the bonus features for you.

I will have to check this out. It looks like something I’d like.
I really want to see this one.
interesting….i also love the cast and would expect a hilarious movie! i haven’t seen it but perhaps it’s a rentable movie; with theater tickets so ridiculous these days we really limit what we go and see for the important ones…(like Harry Potter) :) Thanks for the review!
