Before becoming parents we didn’t really need a camcorder. We bought a cheapish one, but used it mainly to shoot the cats being stupid. We often brought it along for family gatherings but would forget to take it out and get any footage. Once Aerissa came along it became apparent that we needed a quality camera to capture her antics and milestones because our phone videos cameras aren’t really made for those preserving memories, the phone is more for just fun.

We received a DXG Pro Gear A85V HD camcorder to review. This camera is a good size as it fits in one hand, is light, and has a nice 3-inch viewing screen. It records in gorgeous 1080p HD at 30 frame-per-second to catch every little detail of your videos. You can also drop it down to 720p to get 60fps, if needed. It also has a photo mode that allows you take 10 megapixel photos, as good as many digital cameras. The camera bag that comes with is decent too.

We tested it out during the holidays and it did exactly what it was supposed to do. It’s easy to turn on and easy to control the zoom and record buttons. We liked the 12x Optical zoom which allowed us to get closer without losing video quality, but it’s also nice having the extra 10x digital zoom, if we needed it. The viewing screen is also touch-compatible, so you don’t need to use menu buttons, you can just touch the screen to select items. It has nice features such as the ability to tell the camera which type of light you’re shooting in (florescent, sunlight, etc) so it can help correct the color balance automatically.

It comes with ArcSoft TotalMedia software, which we didn’t get to install since we use another program already, but it looks very powerful and helpful in using your videos. The way we transferred our videos is by taking out the camera’s SD card and putting it into our SD Card reader. From here you can upload directly to YouTube or even video editing software to share and edit the videos you made.

We’re going to love having this as Aerissa grows up and does funny things that we can show her grandparents. Plus, I think it’ll get good use this year for more videos reviews and vlogs so Darcy can stop using her phone for those!
