Thomas & Friends – Rescue on the Rails & New 6 DVD Collection Set Review
Kids love trains, especially Thomas & Friends, which is very popular with the preschool aged crowd. Though there are fans of all ages! There is a new DVD out called Rescue on the Rails which was released earlier this December and they have a 6 DVD set out!
Rescue on the Rails has four stories all focused on… rescues!

In the first story, Fiery Flynn tried to find the blue engine in trouble and on fire without waiting to hear the complete dispatch. He doused Edward and Gordon mistakenly. He saw blue engines and didn’t check for signs of fire first. Finally he found Thomas but he had no water left! At each location the diesel engines laughed at Flynn, but thankfully their drivers helped put the fire out. Next time the rescue bell rang, Flynn waited to hear complete instructions so he knew who needed help.
Then in the second story James touted how being a rescue engine makes him a hero. After trying to rescue another train on his own, he messed up and needed to be rescued himself. Toby came along and offered to help and James learned that working together with Toby made them a good team and allowed them to rescue more trains quicker.
Next Edward learned how to be a hero by rescuing trains broken down on the tracks in the third story. He found out that being a hero doesn’t always mean what one thinks, it’s about the perception of who you’ve helped. And finally, in the fourth story, Thomas takes Bertie the bus on a flatbed to show him some sights including the shaky bridge. The flatbed doesn’t do well on the shaky bridge and Bertie gets stranded.
6 DVD set – I actually have only 4 of the ones shown on the packaging, there are 2 different ones included. Each DVD has 4-6 stories on it as well as bonus features. The DVDs include Percy and the Chocolate Crunch, Steamies vs. Diesels, and Thomas and the Special Letter.
All of these collections have great episodes with lessons on listening, team work, self-confidence, friendship, responsibility, and more. It’s a bit different than most kids shows I am used to, but unique is definitely a positive! My daughter liked to watch with the shows on in the background while she played. She’s a fan of bright colors and singing, which there isn’t a lot of; however, my nephews like these shows! My preschool aged nephew especially likes Thomas – so he will be excited to receive these from us.
The 6 DVD collection spans several years of the Thomas show, so it was interesting to watch the older episodes that were more like claymation and using model figures unlike the smoother animation of recent years. Most of the DVDs are enhanced with Autoplay which means you can pop the DVD in and it will play through all the stories and loop through them again if you don’t stop it. It’s nice so I don’t have to stop what I’m doing to start the next one each time.
The bonus features on each DVD is fun for kids too. The Rescue on the Rails DVD has a karaoke music video as well as a game. Some of the other DVDs have singalong songs too plus other features to interact with the characters. My daughter liked the music videos!

I have a nephew who is now 7 years of age. I truly think he is the biggest Thomas & Friends fan in the world..seriously he has over 6 storage bins of Thomas stuff. He plays with Thomas engines and everything “thomas” everyday since he’s was 2. Loves trains, I think he just may become a train engineer when he grows up..lol.
Love Thomas the Tank Engine & all his adventures!
