Tales From the Nursery: The Toddler Years

Video Game Review | Cars 2 for XBox 360

Ka-chow! We had a chance to try out the Cars 2 video game for the Xbox 360 (also available on other platforms).  Most games from movies we don’t really like.  They seem to fall a bit flat, yet sell because of the movie.  This game wasn’t too bad though! I think it’s because while it is based upon the Cars 2 movie, it doesn’t completely try to recreate the movie in the game.  My nephew actually has this game for the Wii and he really likes it!  I didn’t know he had it until after we received our review copy.

In this game you can play as one of 20 characters including Lightning McQueen, Mater, Holly Shiftwell, and Luigi.  It expands upon the plot of the movie, taking you through simulations with high tech gadgets and training to be a spy.  The main game play is racing, but they add some fun to it by allowing maneuvers only Cars 2 characters could pull off, like driving on two wheels, flips and tricks in the air, hopping around and more.

The game starts out with you in a simulated mission much like the beginning of the movie.  It has a tutorial to get you used to the controls and how to race.  My husband was easily placing in 1st.  There are other modes and items to unlock the more you play and accomplish achievements.  So far we have only played single player mode, but you can play locally with up to four players.  This is nice because there doesn’t seem to be as many local multiplayer games anymore – it usually requires online play.

While the game was pretty easy for an experienced gamer such as my husband, it is a good game for kids.  The game is rated 10+ and I agree that it is better suited for older kids, though I think 8 and up would be fine if their parents preview it.  There are explosions and shooting like there was in the movie.  I think the difficulty and learning curve is about right for kids as well – easy enough to jump in, play and have fun, but still has some challenge to it.

This sounds like a great game! My son loves Cars; unfortunately, he’s only two. I’m hoping games like this will still be around when he is old enough :) Thanks for the great review!momwithadotcom
