Tales From the Nursery: The Toddler Years

The League Season Two DVD Set Review

Summary:

Fantasy football provides an outlet for good-natured competition and camaraderie between friends and colleagues, but that’s not always the case. Deception, one-upmanship, and win-at-all-costs mentality rule the day on the virtual gridiron and then extend into personal relationships, marriages and the workplace, inTHE LEAGUE: The Complete Second Season, arrived October 4 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

THE LEAGUE features an ensemble cast of rising actors and comedians.  Mark Duplass (Humpday) plays PETE, the perennial league champ who is struggling to become an adult.  Stephen Rannazzisi (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) is KEVIN, a happily married father and commissioner of the league.  Nick Kroll (Get Him to the Greek) plays RUXIN, who believes he is the smartest of the group but can’t figure out why he can’t seem to win the league championship.  ANDRE, played by Paul Scheer (Human Giant), has continued to be the punching bag of the group since their high school days – a fact that hasn’t changed despite the fact he is now a successful plastic surgeon.  Jon Lajoie is TACO, Kevin’s little brother, a part-time musician and full-time stoner with little interest in fantasy other than hanging with his buddies (whom he struggles to remember).  Katie Aselton (The Freebie) plays JENNY, Kevin’s wife and also his not-so-secret better half in the fantasy league.  Nadine Velazquez (My Name Is Earl) plays Ruxin’s wife SOFIA, whom he is completely infatuated with … and afraid of.

Brian’s Review:

I actually started watching The League due to a friend’s Facebook post on Facebook about Season 1 on Netflix. This was right before Season 2 started. The first season was only 6 episodes, but when Season 2 came along, they got a full 16. I was glad to find out how funny it was and that I had never heard about it. Even though I do play Fantasy Football, I’ve never been very passionate about it. I just keep an eye on my team and hope to win.

These guys take it to another extreme. First off, they have their Season 2 draft in Las Vegas with special guest MC, Chad Ochocinco (who is still always Chad Johnson to me.) The rest of the season doesn’t let up with Andre getting crap from the other guys and Taco doing whatever it is that Taco does.

I did enjoy the episode titled “The Tie” where Andre and Ruxin have to figure out how to break a tie and they don’t want to listen to Commissioner Kevin, so they decide to run a foot race to make the final judgement. Let’s just say that just because you play Fantasy Football doesn’t mean you have athletic ability.

The show does a good job of making a somewhat non-funny hobby, like Fantasy Football, into a really funny sitcom. I’m looking forward to catching up on the first few episodes of Season 3. (Even the wife watches it with me.)
