Clairol Nice ‘n Easy Color Blend Foam Review
I’ve shared before that I’ve been struggling with what to do with my hair. I started going gray at an early age (yes early. Teens-early 20s is early) which apparently runs in the family. Prior to having my daughter, I went to the salon for my hair color and cutting needs. That adds up and with us down to one income… well, I can’t afford to go to the salon.
But I refuse to let my hair get all gray and make me look older beyond my years!
I haven’t used a home kit in about 10 years though. The kits I used to use weren’t so great at covering the gray. Plus, I enjoyed the fun red and purple highlights that my stylist put in my hair. I can’t get that fancy at home, but now I just want to cover the gray at an affordable cost. Well, and look nice too! Receiving the opportunity to try out Clairol’s Nice ‘ Easy Color Blend Foam was pretty exciting for me as you can imagine. If it works – I have my solution!
I tried 4RB – Dark Reddish Brown. The new foam is supposed to be drip-free. The Color Blend technology tones and highlights your hair. With 100% gray coverage, it should last up to eight weeks. I have tried Clairol in the past, but that was MANY years ago. Nothing I used back in the day covered my gray very well. My stylist informed me that I have stubborn grays. She knows, she’s worked hard to cover them for at least 5 years for me! For best results with this, I knew I shouldn’t go more than two shades away. But it was difficult for me to select. My gray made the top of my head nearly white. The rest of my hair was a mix of very dark brown and bold red.
As much as I do not want to show you my gray… I think it is very important to show you how my hair looked before dying it. This is about 7-8 months of outgrowth. My last professional salon dye job was done a few weeks before baby girl was born in October 2010.
I received my box of Clairol right before the 4th of July. It was the perfect weekend for me to try it out since we would be going to the parade, hanging out with family, and being around lots of people. I wanted to look good but also feared showing up with a bad dye job.
Before applying I read through all the instructions. I was told 3 shakes was enough to mix properly but I swear I could not find that info in the instructions. You don’t want to shake it too much.
I found it a bit awkward to squeeze the dye upwards. The foam was so light and bubbly that I found it tough to apply to dry hair in a washing motion. As my hair became wetter with application it became easier to work it in and through.
I did find it was still a little drippy and certainly would splatter. Don’t forget to drape a towel over your shoulders or wear an old tshirt. I neglected to do so and got it on my skin. I was able to wash it off but still – be careful! The smell was a bit strong too so make sure the fan is on and you are in a well ventilated area.
I found leaving my hair down to be messy and make the back of my neck sting. I clipped my hair up then went over my hair line again.
I left it on for an extra 10-15 minutes so it could really work on my gray. I rinsed and conditioned it… Ta-da!
It’s still looking pretty good but it’s only been a couple weeks. I’ll have to let you know if it makes it to the 6-8 week mark!
Before and After!
From left to right: Fresh from the salon; 7-8 months of outgrowth; and a week after applying Clairol’s Nice ‘n Easy Foam
Final thoughts: $10 every 6-8 weeks is a lot more affordable so I can enjoy my non-gray hair once again. I have restored faith in the ability of a home dye kit to actually cover my stubborn gray!

Omgoodness! How dramatic! I love it! The streaks look like you had it done at the salon!
Don’t you love it when you find a do it at home brand that actually works? You look great!
Cute cut too :)closertolucy

Looks great. Now they just need to make a bleach formula and I will be set ;-)crystalnjoe1105
One of my friends told me this week she had the same problems with the foam but it managed to cover all her grays too. I love finding affordable coverage for gray hairs. It looks good.momsmutterings
It looks great! Hopefully it will get a little easier after you’ve practiced with it a little more!LadyRiposter
Thank you! And I hope so :)Syrana
We tried this product two weeks ago and had great results. Only problem I found was it required two bottles for mid-length thick hair. Though I think this is typical and I should have know better. Though since I did not realize it at the beginning, I had to redye with the dual bottle just 3 days after.
Wow! It looks great, and wow! That’s way more affordable than the salon! You’ll probably feel more proficient the next time you use it.
Looks great. I dyed my moms hair using Clairol’s Nice ‘n Easy Foam for the first time 2 weeks ago and so far so good. I agree it does drip, so it’s best to make sure you cover the sink area with an old towel cloth.cuzin_logic
Wow.. It looks like that stuff really works!DanielleLW2B
I have been using Nice’n Easy for almost 40 years but no more. I won’t ever even use Clairol again. This was the worst stuff ever!!!!!!! The smell – there aren’t enough words to describe. Even with fans I thought I would pass out. I can attest to the terrible drippy inconsistent foam. It didn’t reach my roots but it did seem to do a good job of burning my scalp. I also have arthritic hands. I didn’t realize how hard I would have to squeeze the bottle. Since the bottle has to be upright, I couldn’t even use my feet on the floor. There is also less product than with regular nicen easy and since the bottle has to be upright to squeeze you really don’t use all of it without taking the top off. Since there was less product, my hair would not pile on top of my head as usual. I got stains on my arms, shoulders and back. I was taking a trip and had to scrub like mad to lighten them. Leave yourself enough time to wash this out, get to the store and buy another product to do it over again. As I said, I have been coloring my hair for almost 40 years and this was the worst ever!!!! Do not buy this product.
Thank you for sharing your experience. As I said, not everything was perfect and experiences will vary. Some love it, some hate it. It worked well enough for me for being $10 rather than spending $200 at the salon.
The best part? There’s other types of Clairol products and other brands to try so hopefully you find one that works well for you.Syrana
